‘Vento’ means wind in two languages, Portuguese and Italian. In all other countries, the German car maker christened the sedan version of Polo Volkswagen Polo Classic but in India, it came to be known as Vento. Volkswagen introduced the mid-size sedan Vento to compete with Honda City which has dominated the markets in India forever. At the time when the demand for diesel fuelled cars was skyrocketing, Volkswagen came with the beautiful Vento and gave Honda City a tough fight. What clicked for the car is that it came in two versions – petrol and diesel while City had just petrol engine to offer.
While designing VW Vento, the engineers paid as much attention to the performance as to the exterior of the car. It is a sturdy car made of high strength steel frame which ensures that the passengers are safe inside. The look of Vento is rather sporty and distinctively luxurious – it has that bit of German authenticity in it. It is a smart design which resembles Polo in some ways. Like the front of the car has the radiator grille and Vento too has the VW logo sitting out in the front proudly. Stylish headlights and indicators give the car an air of elegance while they are practically useful too. In addition to that, the rear design is innovative with tail lights matching perfectly with the sporty look. Even the interiors of the car are not any less in the style department. As Volkswagen always does, the interiors have been carved with care concentrating on the comfort of the passengers with the upholstery taking Vento to a different level altogether. Comparing Vento with other sedans in India, the quality of the interiors is unmatched; the dashboard is simple and the controls are pretty easy to use.
Volkswagen Vento gave both petrol and diesel options in engine. The 1.6 litre petrol engine at 5250 rpm gives power of 105 Ps and pumps out 153 Nm torque at 3800 rpm while the 1.6 litre diesel engine has same power at 4400 rpm and peak torque of 250 Nm at 1500-2500 rpm. The petrol engine, in addition to that, has 5 speed manual and 6 speed automatic gearbox but the diesel engine comes with a 5 speed manual gearbox which makes the shift in gears smooth. Moreover, the large tyre size help in gaining maximum control over the car – the tyres keep it from off-roading and slipping in watery roads. Vento’s Trendline version comes with 14 inch steel wheels and a spare 14 inch wheel and the Highline version has 15 inch alloy wheels and a spare 14 inch wheel.
As far as safety is concerned, Vento has been designed to provide maximum protection to the passengers. Anti-Lock Braking System has been installed in the car and airbags have been provided to the driver and co-driver to guard them in time of a collision. Anti-theft system, fog lights, front and rear headrests, front disc brakes are some of the other safety features in the car. All in all, Volkswagen has come up with a good sedan which can totally work with the Indian population. It is solid; it is stylish; it is comfortable – what more can one ask for when buying a car?
