Tata entered in the MUV market with the launch of Tata Sumo & it was very well accepted by the people. With the passage of time, company has introduced newer versions of it, so as to cater the changing needs of the people. If we call it a mini Tata Truck, then it should not be taken as a surprise. Other cars have curvaceous body with some designs on the exterior parts, but after looking at it, we were taken in to some other world as it appeared to us that while finalizing the designs of this car, the only instrument used by the designers might be a scale.
Previously it had only one competitor, in the form of Toyota Qualis, but very soon, Toyota stopped the production of Qualis & Tata Sumo Victa became the king of the MUV segment. Though it didn’t enjoy the legacy for a very long time as Chevrolet launched its Tavera to compete with it, but still it rules the heart of the adventure loving people. This hard worker can be spotted anywhere, swinging people, from the sand dunes of Rajasthan to mountainous regions Nagaland. The exterior finish can be termed as OK but the interiors especially the way in which the console on the dashboard is presented, is not likable. From interiors, it looks as it has only been meant to ferry people.
Sumo Victa is capacious from inside as it can accommodate decent number of people in one go & also it is rough in built, which makes it favorable choice of cab owners. To bring this car in motion, Tata has fixed turbo charged diesel engine behind its head lamps. The displacement of this engine, which produces power of 70 BHP at 3000 rpm & torque of 223 Nm at 1600 rpm, is 2956 cc. It has to be kept in mind that this is not the only available option in Sumo, as another, 2.0 L inline diesel engine is also available which produces power of 67 BHP at 4500 rpm & torque of 117.5 Nm at 2500 rpm.
Both these options have 5-speed manual gear transmission. Amongst its outer specifications, the car is 4285 mm long, 1726 mm wide & 1976 mm high. 5 people can easily sit in it & its turning radius is 4.90 meter. Both the pairs of wheels have independent suspension as in the front we located coil spring & anti roll bar while leaf spring was there at the back. Along with suspensions, it also has double acting dampers to soak the jerks.
Braking becomes superb when the car has the combination of disc & drum brakes & that is why the braking system of Sumo Victa is fabulous. Other standard safety features are high mounted stop lamp, engine immobilizer, collapsible steering wheel & anti sub marine seats.
Certain points at which it comes at the back foot are small amount of legroom & the build quality. The transmission & the engine also need refinement. Tata should also work upon its looks, which make it very boring in appearance, both from exteriors & interiors.
