Following in the footsteps of 1.6L engine petrol Polos and the Polo R2, VW's GT TDI is all geared up to make its official rally debut at Chikmaglur Rally (INRC's final round) which will be held between Decemeber 19th and 21st this year.
The car will be making it to the initial rounds with Team Jungle Hut's VIkram Mathias. The car features a turbocharged 1.6L diesel engine, quite similar to the GT TDI launched recently. Other features include upgraded brakes, performance suspension, free flow exhaust, and a remapped ECU.
VW India's head of motorsport, Mr. Prithviraj Siddappa was quite happy with the car and that it made the final cut in the diesel category of the championship. And because the car is reliable and powerful, it really helped the company in taking the call. But he did admit that they are not focussing much on the rally but is using the platform to test the vehicle. He added further that the running in and basic checks of the GT TDI have already been completed while the hardcore testing shall be conducted during the competiton itself. And having a driver of Mathias' status will simply aid in further development of this car.
